Best Wetlands in the World

Wetlands are natural features that occur due to various activities. There are a lot of plants  that are found in wetlands. There are also a lot of animals that are found in wetlands.  We have picked a number of wetlands that are regarded as the best in the world.

The Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta covers 16,000km2. It is located in Botswana and it is one of the best wetlands in the world. The wetlands are found where the Kavango River empties over the sands of the Kalahari Desert.  This wetland is a freshwater wetland.  There are various trees, plants and animals that are found in this wetland.

There are also visiting animals such as elephant, hippopotamus, giraffe, wildebeest, crocodile, lion, cheetah, rhinoceros and zebra. There are an estimated 200,000 large mammals in and around the delta but not all of them are all year round habitants. If you are planning to visit this area, the best time to visit is between July and October when these animals return to the delta.

The Pantanal

The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland.  It is a freshwater wetland  located mostly in Brazil and it extends to Bolivia as well as Paraguay. It covers 230,000km2. Part of the Pantanal is a national park. Marshlands, floodplains, lagoons and interconnected drainage lines make up this wetland. There are a lot of wildlife animals that you can go and see in this wetland. These include over 658 species of birds, 50 reptiles, 270 types of fish , 190 mammals, and an amazing 1,132 species of butterflies. It is perfect to spot a jaguar in the wild because there is less thick rainforest cover. May to October is the best time to visit because it will be the dry season.

Danube Delta

Danube Delta is one of Europe’s largest wetlands.  It is found in Germany. It has vast reed beds, lakes, waterways, tree-fringed lakes and marshes. It inhibits more than 300 species of birds and 45 fish species. If you want to experience this Delta, the best wa0y to do so is by boat. The delta is an all year round destination.

Kafue Flats

It covers 6,500km2 and i[t is located in Kafue National Park. It has an exceptional wetland scenery of grasslands, lagoons, marshes, swamps, reed beds and seasonally flooded floodplain which are  flooded to a depth of less than a metre in the rainy season. They dry  out to a black clay in the dry season. The wetland is found in Zambia. Zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, roan antelopes, kudus and hippos are among the animals that you will find in Kafue Flats.

The Sudd

The Sudd is found in South Sudan. It covers 30,000km2 during the dry season and in the wet season it extends to 130,000km2. The extension of the wetland depends on the waters that flow from Lake Victoria.

The Sundarbans

The Sundarbans cover 10,000km2 and it is found in southern Bangladesh  and it extends into West Bangal in India.
