BUG Partners

The Beneficial Uses Group (BUG) is one of several subcommittees formed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Interagency Coordination Team (ICT) to address environmental issues associated with the Houston-Galveston Navigation Channels (HGNC) expansion project.

The BUG was given the specific goal of identifying environmentally and economically responsible ways to utilize the material dredged from the Houston Ship Channel expansion project. Created in 1990, the BUG is an unprecedented coalition of the following 8 government agencies:

 

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA)
Owns and operates the public facilities along the Houston Ship Channel and is the Channel's official sponsor

 

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
Develops, manages and executes engineering, construction and real estate programs for the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, other federal agencies and other governments

 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Protects human health and safeguards the natural environment

 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
Conserves, protects and improves conditions for fish and wildlife and their habitats for the benefit of the American people

 

The National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS)
Maintains living marine resources for the benefit of the nation

 

The U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
Provides leadership to help people conserve, improve and sustain natural resources and the environment

 

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD)
Manages and conserves the natural and cultural resources of Texas

 

The Texas General Land Office (TGLO)
Serves all people of Texas through, among other things, protection of the environment and stewardship of state lands and resources
